The overwhelming answer to this question is…’It depends.’
Simply, the answer is yes– but there are several factors such as how thick the top layer of veneer, whether the floor has a hand-scraped finish, and even things such as the brand of flooring that matter when it comes to refinishing your engineered hardwood floor.
With most engineered floors, you should be able to be refinished 3-4 times, however if the floors have a hand-scraped finish this becomes a bit more complicated, and if the veneer is thin, then the floors will not be able to be refinished at all.
How to Refinish Engineered Hardwood Floors
One of the perks of wood flooring is the variety, with a multitude of grains, patterns, textures, and colors to choose from, you’ll be able to have the flooring of your dreams. The durability of hardwood floors means that they will last a very, very long time and over time you may want to change things up–the good news is that you can refinish both natural wood and engineered hardwood multiple times over the lifetime of the floor.
There are a few different methods of refinishing your engineered floors, in this blog, we are going to explore those options.
Before proceeding with any kind of change to your floor, consider what you want and how it fits with what you currently have. Not all flooring works well with stains and glazes, so you’ll first want to consider what color you’re hoping for and determine if that is going to be possible. For example, if you have dark floors already, chances are you won’t be able to do much to make them too much lighter. If you choose to refinish your floors, glazing is one method to change the color and is especially good for engineered hardwood floors with thin veneer as it allows you to skip the sanding.
Sanding and Refinishing
This is by far the most popular method. Sanding removes the existing finish and allows for a clean slate for new stain. Once the existing finish is removed, you have the natural wood to work with to apply new color, or simply add a clear finish on top of your natural color.
Engineered Hardwood Flooring Product
Of course, it is almost ALWAYS less expensive to refinish your hardwood flooring than replace it, and the longevity and durability of engineered hardwood floors promise a long lifespan, making it an ideal flooring investment.
