It’s tax season and if you’re planning on getting a tax refund this year, putting the money towards new floors in your home could be a great way to use the extra cash to increase the value of your home. Here’s the 2018 list of top investments Flowers Flooring recommends for people to make on their floors.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floors are timeless and hold their value when compared to many other flooring options. Hardwood floors are also appealing to buyers, which can help when you decide to sell your home. The best place to install hardwood flooring is in main living spaces such as the living rooms, dining rooms and entry ways. Flowers Flooring recommends not installing hardwood in wet areas such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens. Harwood flooring is a tried and true flooring investment and a wise way to spend your tax refund.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

Vinyl plank flooring, also known as resilient vinyl is one of the hottest selling floors in the industry. Flooring experts don’t see this trend slowing any time soon. Planks with believable color, grain and texture make it hard to tell it’s not hardwood or wood plank tile. Vinyl plank flooring is a great investment in your home as its water resistant, looks great and feels amazing under foot.

Before using your tax refund dollars to invest in flooring be sure to consider your lifestyle before selecting a flooring type. Maintaining your floors and keeping them in good shape is critical to retaining value. If you have pets or young children soft hardwoods or light colored carpet may not be the best choice.

This sand free and dust free restoration process brings damaged and worn hardwood flooring back to life by erasing the damage caused by pets and excessive wear. Engineered hardwood floors that are coated with aluminum oxide are unable to be repaired by traditional buffing and coating or sand and finish work. This hardwood restoration process restores floors to like new condition, saving homeowners thousands in replacement costs.

“Many homeowners think their damaged solid hardwood or engineered hardwood floors need to be replaced, which can be pricy. Hardwood restoration can save homeowners thousands of dollars in replacement costs or sand and finish costs, and have their floors looking like new in a fraction of the time,” said Catie Mullins, Flowers Flooring Sales Associate. “Hardwood restoration is a popular choice for people who are selling their home. Good looking floors bring value and help sell a house quicker. This is a perfect, less expensive way to get a home show ready, on the market and sold.”

The Restoration Process

Step 1: Remove all contaminants including dirt, trash, and residue from cleaning and polishing products. This de-contamination process takes the floor back to its original state.

Step 2: Once the decontamination process is complete, an etching compound is applied. This process melds damage such as scratches and mars, greatly reducing or eliminating their appearance.

Step 3: After the etching is complete a ceramic-reinforced, odorless 2-component polyurethane finish is applied. This finish provides exceptionally high scratch resistance, high elasticity and chemical resistance suitable for high traffic and commercial locations.

With Thanksgiving only a week away and family and friends will be gathering in your home to celebrate together you might be wondering how to protect your floors from the extra wear and tear. This is a great time of year to share your space and your home and showcase your beautiful floors. You’ll want to make sure you take a few necessary precautions to protect your floors during the holidays. Here are a few tips from Flowers Flooring that will help keep your floors looking great before, during and after the holiday rush.

  1. Lay out durable and waterproof floor mats by all doors to protect your floors. Many people will be coming in and out of your house, bringing with them debris, dirt and rocks from the outside. Your first layer of protection will be the mats you place both outside and inside your home. These mats will remove some of the dirt from their feet and keep them from tracking it inside. You can also purchase fun, holiday themed door mats to match your holiday décor.
  2. Install a rubber mat by the kitchen sink to protect your floors from water damage. Water is one of the biggest causes of floor damage to hardwood or laminate floors. Many people will be in the kitchen washing dishes and their hands. It is wise to lay a rubber mat down where any guests will be getting water, whether that be the kitchen sink or by the fridge, if yours has a built-in water dispenser.
  3. Utilize area rugs in your most trafficked hallways. As guests fill your home, they will be walking back and forth through the hallways as they are the main thoroughfare to the kitchen and living room. Heavy traffic causes wear and tear flooring, so in order to protect your well used hallways, put a rug down.
  4. Spills are going to happen over the holidays. No worries, just clean spills up quickly. The longer liquid stays on the floor, the worse it will be. Be sure to have the necessary cleaning supplies and plenty of rags or paper towels on hand for clean ups to protect your floors.

We hope these tips come in handy to protect your floors this holiday season. From our family to yours, Flowers Flooring wishes you a blessed Thanksgiving.

Fall brings with it plenty of trends such as pumpkin spice, warmer color palettes, and new décor. Your home’s floors are not immune to fall’s influence. If you are looking to have new floors installed in your home this fall, find the perfect style floor with these 5 fall flooring trends.

  1. Cork

Comfort is always in style and cork flooring is one of the most comfortable flooring options on the market. This makes cork a popular flooring choice for rooms you spend a lot of time in such as the kitchen. It provides a comfortable cushion underfoot. It is also a natural thermal and acoustic insulator, which makes any room it is installed in naturally warm and quiet. Cork is eco-friendly and is low maintenance, which gives homeowners piece of mind. Cork flooring comes in a wide variety of colors to fit any style and is the perfect fall flooring trend to try this year.

  1. Luxury Vinyl Plank

Vinyl flooring has come a long way from the rolled vinyl in your grandmother’s kitchen. While it remains a budget choice, it is no longer a style liability. There are hundreds of samples to choose from in a wide variety of colors, textures and widths. Vinyl plank is kid friendly, pet friendly and water resistant. It’s highly recommended for wet areas such as mud rooms, laundry rooms and kitchens. It’s virtually indestructible and has been Flowers Flooring hottest selling product in 2017, so as a fall flooring trend, this is definitely one to check out.

  1. Dark Stained Floors

Dark floors are a perfect contrast with bright furniture and light-colored walls and our third fall flooring trend. Homeowners who like the look of less grainy wood, often prefer dark stained floors, as the grain is much harder to see. Dark floors create a more modern vibe, especially when mixed with light, bright furniture. The dark, uniform floor color also makes the room easier to decorate since there are fewer colors to clash with.

  1. Exotic Hardwoods

Exotic hardwoods such as Acacia, Brazilian Tigerwood, Cherry and Mahogany feature vibrant colors and unique wood grains that stand out and make the floor a centerpiece of the home. Exotic hardwoods capture the natural beauty of the outdoors and the natural materials. Exotic hardwood flooring generally offers a wider array of choices in regards to color, texture and hardness than traditional flooring options like oak or maple. In addition, exotic hardwoods tend to be harder than North American wood, making it more durable and on of the top fall flooring trends for this year.

  1. Gray Hardwood

Gray is certainly the new tan and it’s here to stay. The color gray is making its mark on furniture, bedding, wall coverings and now flooring. Gray is a flexible, neutral color that can go in any room of your home. And while you can purchase gray engineered hardwood, you can also refinish your existing solid hardwood in the perfect shade of gray for your home.

Carpet tile is gaining in popularity in both homes and businesses due to the fact that it’s easy to install, easy to clean and easy to replace. Carpet tiles are also extremely durable and versatile, and make great flooring options for businesses, kids playrooms, family rooms and basements. Carpet tiles are squares of carpet that fit together and come in various sizes including 12×12, 18×18 and 24×24 inches.

Unlike rolled wall-to-wall carpet, carpet tiles are cut into smaller square sizes, which make installing and replacing stained carpet tiles easy. If an area of carpet tile gets soiled and needs replaced, you will simply need to remove those specific carpet tiles and have new carpet tiles installed. You don’t need to replace the entire room of carpet.

As an added bonus, carpet tiles are easy to clean; you simply vacuum as you would with any carpet. Carpet tiles are usually low pile so they trap less dirt and debris. When your flooring professional orders your carpet tile, be sure they order extra, so that you have the extras on hand in the event you need to replace one.

Carpet tiles require less of a waste factor than wall-to-wall carpet, which will bring your material costs down. Utilizing carpet tiles also avoids awkward seams in the middle of any room, since they are individual tiles that can be cut to fit any space or angle, making them versatile in rooms with many turns and complex layouts.

Carpet tiles can be a colorful and creative way to add a touch of color and style to any room. You can even mix and match carpet tile colors.

Spring is the best time of year to replace the flooring in your home. In this blog, we’ll explore the top 3 reasons to plan your flooring installation over the next few months. An added bonus is Flowers Flooring Spring sale (10% Off Your Entire Project), and new finance options (12 or 24-Month, 0% Interest).

Why Spring is the Best Time to Replace Flooring

When you’re having new flooring installed the doors will be open a lot. Installers will be walking in and out. Old flooring will be carried outside and new flooring will be brought in. During the cold winter months, all the in and out can dramatically cool your home, and in the summer your home could heat up, causing your AC to work overtime. Spring brings milder weather, resulting in a more comfortable and energy efficient install.

Secondly, you may want to keep your windows open for ventilation to get rid of new floor fumes and odors. When installing certain types of flooring floor adhesive, adhesive removers, stains and sealers can emit noxious fumes and odors that you will want to alleviate as soon as possible through open windows and fresh air.

Certain types of flooring such as hardwood and laminate need to acclimate in your home for 48 to 72 hours prior to being properly installed. This means they need to take on the humidity level and temperature found indoors. If they don’t problems such as buckling can arise. Humidity and temperatures are more moderate in the Spring. In the summer, outdoor humidity may be 75% to 90% or higher. Spring allows the fastest and most complete acclimation with the least risk of problems because homes are not likely to have either very high or very low humidity.

While Flowers Flooring offers both oil based and water based options, we usually recommend oil based polyurethane over water based for 3 simple reasons:

  1. It looks better
  2. It lasts longer
  3. It costs less

While these reasons may make the choice simple, there are always exceptions and different customer needs that require more exploring on this subject. Both oil based and water based polyurethane have their advantages.

Advantages of Oil Based Polyurethane

Oil based polyurethane provides more depth to the hardwood, both in color and shine. Water based polyurethane has a duller color and duller finish. Over time, the water based polyurethane will continue to dull, while the oil based amberizes and darkens a bit, giving the hardwood a richer look.

Oil based polyurethane also lasts longer than water based. Oil based is simply more durable. Water based polyurethane has lower Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), which is why it does not last as long. Water based polyurethane is thinner, which is why installers need to apply 4 to 5 coats to equal the durability of 2 coats of oil based.

Oil based polyurethane also costs less than water based, which will dramatically reduce the cost of sand & finish or buff & coat jobs. Customers who are set on using a water based poly typically spend 15 to 25 percent more. On top of this initial cost, keep in mind you will need to redo the job sooner, so water based poly costs a lot more when you factor in the life of the floor.

Advantages of Water Based Polyurethane

There are several benefits to water based polyurethane, which makes it a great option in some circumstances. The top benefit to water based poly is that it dries faster. A water based job can usually be completed in 2 days, and you can walk on the floor the same night. Oil based poly can take 3 to 5 days (depending on the humidity) and you need to wait at least 24 hours before walking on the floor. Depending on how quickly you want your floors complete, water based poly may be a better choice for you.

Water based poly also looks better on certain types of wood such as natural maple. Maple is a lighter wood than oak and oil based polyurethane can yellow maple hardwood over time. For both white washed and gray stained floors, water based polyurethane is certainly the way to go. Oil based polyurethane will turn these floors yellow.

Water based polyurethane also doesn’t have as much odor. While both polyurethanes smell, water based has less of a smell which could be better for smaller jobs, or for people who are more sensitive to smell.
