It’s a new year and that means out with the old and in with the new. The 2017 flooring trends are leaning towards brighter, bolder colors that add style and functionality to any room. Whether your currently considering tile, carpet, hardwood, vinyl plank or laminate, neutral colors are fading out and more vibrant colors that transform a room from drab into fab are making a comeback. Here’s what to expect in flooring trends in 2017:

Tile

While the wood-look tile is not a “new” trend by any means, it is certainly building momentum in regards to popularity and it is quickly becoming a whole house staple, which means it’s no longer being installed in just kitchens and bathrooms, but bedrooms, living rooms and more.

This trend is here to stay which is why Flowers Flooring recently added another line of wood-plank tile to our tile selection.

Vinyl Plank

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is upping the ante on realistic wood looks and is becoming a very popular choice among homeowners with high-traffic areas or children and pets. LVP is extremely durable and is the perfect choice for water areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms, as this flooring is waterproof and virtually indestructible. LVP flooring is available in many styles that mimic current wood and tile flooring trends.

Flowers Flooring offers a wide array of LVP, including Shaw’s Floorte collection.

Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring

Even with the influx of wood-look flooring options, wood flooring is a classic choice and there will always be a market for wood flooring. The 2017 wood flooring color trends are gray, blonde and dark. Neutral wood flooring is out for 2017. Instead homeowners are looking for bold looks that make their home stand out above the rest. Standard 2.25 inch hardwood is becoming less popular and wider, more rustic looks are in. These include hand-scraped and wire brushed wood planks.

Carpet

With numerous textures, patterns, and colors available, carpet is emerging as a focal point in interior designs. No, neutral carpet has not disappeared completely, but today’s carpet choices are bolder and brighter. Berber carpet is still a popular choice, but unlike plain berber that was popular in the 1990s, today’s versions have more texture and pattern. Variations in height and sculpted effects also offer a bolder look. Even more traditional carpets now offer more visual interest with more extreme differences in pile cut and thicker, deeper loop textures.

Laminate

Laminate flooring has come a long way in the past few years. There are now laminate floors on the market that are waterproof. Yes, waterproof laminate. Flowers Flooring anticipates sales of this laminate to explode in 2017, as more homeowners seek a durable and economical flooring choice.

Hidden Flooring Costs Big Box Stores Wish You Didn’t Know About!

If you’re in the market for new floors think twice before buying at a big box store. While the big box stores may offer impossibly low prices, these low prices come at a cost – cutting corners, offering inferior products and hiding fees elsewhere.

As a locally owned Charlotte, NC flooring store, Flowers Flooring prioritizes quality over quantity. Unlike big box stores that offer flooring products and services, Flowers Flooring specializes in flooring only and we care about your end result more than our bottom line. Before you invest in new flooring for your home, learn what our competitors don’t want you to know about the true cost of doing business with them.

Inferior Selection of Flooring

When a store touts next day installation or a huge price decrease, it usually only applies to a very limited selection of flooring. Whether its discount laminate or pre-stocked carpet, this deal means they have an abundance of the flooring in their warehouse they are trying to unload. Pre-stocked flooring selections are never a good sign for discerning homeowners, because they appeal to the broadest possible customer base, which usually means it’s plain, boring or cheaply made.

Uncaring Work

Big box stores save money by putting several installations on one contractor’s schedule. If your flooring installation team has incentives to move on to the next install quickly, they are most likely not going to spend the extra time on your floor to ensure the perfect install. Some contractors may even resort to cost-cutting and time- saving tactics that result in bumps and lumps in your new floor. Instead of padding our profits by squeezing as many installations in our schedule each day, Flowers Flooring works to accommodate your schedule and we ensure our installation services are detailed, thoughtful and thorough.

Delays in Delivery and Installation

When you pay a low price, you may be faced with long wait times to get your flooring delivered and installed. If you order a specialty flooring that isn’t in stock, you could wait months for your floors to arrive. Box stores also have long installation lead times and inflexible installation options that may force you to miss work or wait even longer for your new floors.

Hidden Fees

Often times quick and dirt cheap flooring installation could cost you more than expected. Big box stores make up for cheap rates by adding a variety of other fees elsewhere, which means their standard installation service includes almost nothing beyond the basics. Hidden fees may apply to:

  • Estimating or measuring the dimensions of your space – FREE through Flowers Flooring
  • Delivering the flooring- FREE through Flowers Flooring
  • Cutting around your door thresholds – FREE through Flowers Flooring
  • Offering extra grout colors with tile installations – FREE through Flowers Flooring
  • Subfloor repair – Many box stores are unable to complete subfloor repair, which means after your existing floors are torn up you would have to contract with another company to fix your subfloor damage before your new floors can be installed. Flowers Flooring installers are able to fix subfloor damage right on the spot; without any additional delays.

Warranties, Future Repair and Maintenance Costs

Budget flooring doesn’t usually offer good warranties or extra protection. To add insult to injury, if the installation methods are inferior your new floors can be especially vulnerable to damage. For example, carpet may not be stain resistant, laminate and hardwood may not be durable and tile may not be prepped right resulting in cracked tiles. When you invest in quality flooring that includes specialty manufacturing methods and standards such as Shaw Floors, you avoid the cost of cleaning, fixing, or replacing damaged floors later.

Flowers Flooring extensive flooring selection and transparent services don’t include any hidden costs, but hidden expenses could be lurking behind the glossy big box store deals you keep seeing. Don’t fall for false promises that may leave you with unexpected expenses, delays and flooring problems. Call (704) 445-7750, stop by the showroom, or click through to Flowers Flooring today to browse our selection of flooring and to schedule your FREE in-home estimate.

Did you know that carpet could contain 100 times more allergens than hard surface floors? (Source: e-healthy homes). If you suffer from allergies like one in five people in the U.S., you may want to think twice about replacing your old carpet with new carpet. Carpeting is a reservoir for dust mites, pet dander, mold spores and other allergy causing substances that lurk within the fibers.

To avoid carpet allergies, consider replacing carpeting with hard surface flooring such as luxury vinyl, hardwood or laminate. Hard surface flooring doesn’t harbor dust mites or other allergens and is much simpler to clean. This type of flooring is a smart choice that can improve the quality of your home environment by eliminating carpet allergies. This is especially true in areas of the home that you spend a lot of time in such as the bedroom.

Both solid hardwood and engineered hardwood are beautiful and long lasting. Hardwood floors come in a wide variety of types, textures and colors, but unlike carpet, hardwood does not contribute to carpet allergies.  For homeowners looking to spend less, laminate flooring is a great choice. Like hardwood floors, laminate floors offer an amazing selection of designs with the look and texture of real wood and stone at a fraction of the cost. As an added benefit, laminate floors are extremely durable and stand up to the wear and tear of pets and kids, while resisting the buildup of allergens.

Luxury vinyl is another alternative to carpet that is giving hardwood and laminate flooring a run for the money.  According to the World Floor Covering Association, luxury vinyl is one of the fastest growing trends in the flooring industry. This is a result of extraordinary photo technology that mimics wood or tile so closely that you have to look twice to see that it’s vinyl.

One of the biggest challenges to overcome when it comes to selecting new flooring is the sheer scale of choice now available, and this is especially true when it comes to new floors for your kitchen. While there are pro’s and con’s of virtually every flooring type (tile, hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, vinyl) except carpet for your kitchen, this article will highlight the merits of installing tile in your kitchen.

Tile is arguably the flooring type of choice for a kitchen, but why? Below are the top 5 reasons why to choose tile for your kitchen floor.

  1. Return on Investment (ROI) – The number one request from homeowners and tenants, when they’re looking for a new home is tile floors in the kitchen. Tile looks amazing, is timeless and is incredibly durable. It can also be pricy but the ROI is high as tile floors increase the value of your home. There’s a tile floor for virtually every budget – from low cost and durable tiles for a rental property to sophisticated and high-end tiles to bump up the ROI on an upmarket residence.
  2. Style Options – Long gone are the days of boring tile options. There are literally thousands of tiles and tile patterns to choose from. If you can dream it, Flowers Flooring can install it. Perhaps you’re set on wood flooring in your kitchen, there’s even a tile floor that looks like real wood. Wood tile planks are becoming very popular as they are more durable and resist moisture in wet areas such as the kitchen.
  3. Performance – Tile floors deliver durability like no other. This is especially important in a kitchen due to the high traffic, spills, cleaning and the potential for lots of dropped items such as kitchenware. If you want to install a durable floor that will last, a tile floor is certainly way to go.
  4. Maintenance – While wood looks great in a kitchen, it takes lots of extra care and attention to keep it looking its best. Tile on the other hand simply needs a sweep or a wet mop to keep it looking its best for years to come. With constant spills and food accidents, tile floors ensure a quick and easy clean up, making it the perfect floor choice for the kitchen.
  5. Hygienic – Hygiene in your kitchen is critical and not just on the appliances and countertops. Clean kitchen floors are essential to the well being of your family, especially if you have young children. Keeping a tile floor hygienically clean is much easier than any other flooring option. It’s also worth noting that unlike hardwood, vinyl or linoleum, tile floors are non-flammable, an important point to keep in mind for kitchen flooring.

With so many flooring options available to homeowners today, selecting a basement floor can be an overwhelming part of your basement redo. While many different materials are available such as carpet, tile, laminate, engineered wood and others, they are not all appropriate options for basements. The two most important options to consider when buying basement floors is how well flooring will hold up to foot traffic and moisture. The flooring material you select will have a great impact on the look, feel and overall warmth of your basement.

Carpet

Wall to wall carpeting will be the warmest option. Both the carpet and the pad will act as an insulator from the cold concrete underneath. I personally prefer Shaw’s new Life Happens carpet. The waterproof carpet backing prevents liquids from soaking into the carpet padding. This is a perfect choice for homes with children and pets.

Laminate/Engineered Flooring

Laminate and engineered flooring are a beautiful choice for basement floors. The material and installation can be more expensive than carpet but usually less expensive than tile. Both materials are installed over a thin pad which provides some insulation. While these flooring types will not be as cold as tile, they will not be as warm as carpet. You can however add warmth by placing area rugs in appropriate places.

Ceramic and Vinyl Tile

Ceramic and Vinyl Tile are the most durable choices for a basement floor. If water damage occurs it will not damage ceramic or vinyl flooring. These choices are more expensive than carpet or laminate flooring but they are more durable and withstand humidity changes and water. I would not recommend installing vinyl sheet flooring in a basement. If water damage occurs and seeps underneath the vinyl sheet flooring it will raise the floor, making it impossible to make a seamless patch.

Hardwood

I DO NOT recommend hardwood floors in a basement for two reasons.

  1. The humidity changes to much and can cause serious damage to hardwood floors.
  2. You would need to install a subfloor to anchor the hardwood to. Subfloor installation raises your install costs considerably.

Flooring retailers across the U.S., including Flowers Flooring are looking at flooring in a whole new light. Retailers are focusing more on fashion and recognizing that flooring is the stage on which customers’ décor dreams become reality. Estimators at Flowers Flooring are trained to help homeowners select flooring that compliments paint colors, wall coverings, and upholstery fabrics. Estimators are also trained to understand current flooring trends including colors, textures, patterns, materials and styles consumers are looking for.

There are currently 4 trends driving flooring sales:

  1. Abstract Patterns Inspired by Nature – Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) has witnessed a dramatic increase in demand among homeowners, and is now being used as a faux wood product for homeowners worried about scratch and moisture resistance. LVT is available in varying widths and lengths to resemble the look of cut wood as well as organic materials.Homeowners are looking for a natural look such as wood styles that flaunt the natural imperfections and grain character of the raw material. This is a big shift from engineered perfection. More and more homeowners are looking for a rustic appearance that can be found in solid wood flooring, laminates, tile, stone, and LVT.
  1. Gray is the New Tan – Gray is now a new classic color. Wood and wood-look flooring is now available in gray tones and is being used to instantly transform a room into trendy industrial or urban styles. Concrete floors are also popular but for those looking for a less industrial look, Flowers Flooring now offers porcelain tiles that give homeowners the desired concrete look with the performance and durability of tile.
  1. Mixed Width Formats – Homeowners are showing an increased interest in incorporating a mix of plank widths and lengths across a floor. This transformation away from engineered uniformity is a very popular trend in 2016.
  1. Parquet – The classic herringbone and chevron layouts are making a huge come back. These patterns provide instant texture and interest to the floor. Homeowners can be as creative as they like adding a big, bold splash of color with a chevron pattern.

When you hear the term luxury vinyl (also referred to as LVT), most people automatically think of the old peel-and-stick vinyl. Luxury vinyl flooring is a new category of flooring that provides an attractive and durable option for high traffic areas. While commercial designers are huge fans of luxury vinyl, this product hasn’t received the attention it deserves from residential homeowners.

Luxury vinyl tile couldn’t be more different than peel-and-stick tile, not only in how it’s manufactured, but also in how it looks and in its applications. Luxury vinyl combines the high-end look of hardwood or natural stone with the durability of vinyl flooring. As a moisture resistant product, LVT is a perfect fit for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Luxury vinyl tile is manufactured by using advanced photographic technologies. There are four distinct layers fused together to produce the final product:

  1. Resilient Vinyl Backing
  2. Vinyl Color Layer
  3. Photographic Film Layer
  4. Urethane or Aluminum Oxide Top Layer

Homeowners can now have the look, graining and character of real hardwood floors with LVT. Today’s state-of-the-art manufacturing processes can create LVT planks that look like real wood, tile and textured stone. “I installed LVT in my kitchen and pantry. My family and friends have to get on their hands and knees to inspect it because they simply don’t believe me when I tell them it’s not real wood,” said Mrs. Moore, a recent Flowers Flooring customer.

Flowers Flooring sells and installs Shaw Luxury Vinyl Tile and Plank. It has a realistic texture and with hundreds of colors and styles to choose from, matching any décor is easy.
