Instead of cranking up the heat or pulling out an extra blanket to stay warm this winter, why not consider upgrading your existing flooring as a way to stay toasty during the cooler months? The flooring experts at Flowers Flooring located in Cornelius, NC provide tips on flooring materials that make the cold winters in Charlotte, and even the hot summers more bearable thanks to their insulating abilities. This blog will discuss weather-friendly floors and how they can help you stay more comfortable in your Charlotte area home year-round.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury Vinyl Flooring which includes both Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) comes in wood-look plank and stone look tiles that can be glued down or installed on a floating floor. Luxury Vinyl Flooring is very versatile and combines the best of both worlds when it comes to staying comfortable year-round. Flowers Flooring recommends using Leggett & Platt whisper step underlayment beneath the flooring to create an insulating floor that keeps your home comfortable in both winter and summer. Whisper Step underlayment features unmatched, high-density support under LVP and LVT. It provides a significant reduction in impact noise and can be used over most substrates.

To stay extra warm this winter, consider a radiant heating system that is installed under the flooring. There are many LVP and LVT that can installed over radiant heat. This will keep your toes warm all winter long. Some additional benefits of luxury vinyl flooring include its durability, water-resistance, and its affordability.

Stone Tile with Radiant Heat

Stone is a very conductive material, which means that heat travels through it very efficiently. While stone is a great choice for keeping cool in the Charlotte summer, it can be very cold to walk across in the winter months. However, stone’s conductivity makes it the perfect material to pair with a radiant heating system. Flowers Flooring can install a radiant heating system beneath your stone tile floor to warm your floors and your feet in the winter months. Unlike insulating floors like cork or carpet, the stone will let heat directly from the radiant system escape into the room, amplifying the warmth you feel underfoot. When spring rolls around again, you simply need to turn off the radiant heat and benefit from the tile’s cool touch to stay comfortable and cool during the summer months.

Vinyl Plank Flooring – Looks Great and Works Hard

Top Five Reasons to Tile Your Kitchen

Refinishing hardwood floors is one of the easiest ways to drastically improve the look and feel of your floors. Whether you discovered hardwood under your existing carpet, or your floors need a facelift, there’s not a home improvement project out there that will do more to improve the look, feel and value of your living space. Flowers Flooring refinishes dozens of hardwood floors each month and we receive a lot of questions regarding the overall process, when to refinish, and timelines. This blog will answer these questions and more, regarding the hardwood refinish process.

How do I know when to refinish my hardwood?

The answer to this question depends on the present state of your floors and how many times you have refinished the floors in the past. If your floor has been dulled and scratched over the years, you’re the perfect candidate for a hardwood floor refinish. However, if your hardwood floors are badly warped, sag or bulge, or if there’s been extensive water damage or pet stains, refinishing your hardwood will most likely not be enough. In these instances, you will need to replace all or part of the floor before you get started.

How many times can I refinish my floors?

Refinishing hardwood floors can only be done so many times, since the first step is sanding the floor down to a new and untainted wood surface. If you keep sanding the floor, eventually you will reach a point where there simply isn’t enough wood left to refinish. During your free in-home estimate, Flowers Flooring will check to see how much wood you have to work with.

Can I refinish my engineered hardwood floors?

Yes, as long as the wear layer on the engineered hardwood is thick enough. The average refinish removes .75 to 1 mm of the floors surface. A thick wear layer means your floor can be sanded and refinished more often, increasing the lifespan of the floor.

How long does it take to refinish hardwood floors from start to finish?

The timeline depends on the square footage of your floors and the type of polyurethane you are using – oil based, or water based. Oil based poly tends to take longer to dry. In general, it will usually take 3 to 5 days to refinish hardwood floors with an oil-based polyurethane, plus drying time. Factors that play into this is the color of the stain, how dark the stain is, how humid it is, and how many coats of polyurethane are applied. Each coat of poly usually needs 24 hours of dry time.

In addition, stain will also require 24 hours to dry, but if it’s a darker stain, it could take 36 to 48 hours to dry. After your floors are completed, you will need to wait before walking on them or replacing furniture. At a minimum, you should wait at least 24 hours before walking on the floors. For the first 48 hours Flowers Flooring recommends wearing socks only (no shoes and no bare feet). Ideally, you should wait a total of 4 days before moving furniture back into place. This is to allow enough time for the floors to dry and cure.

When is the best time to refinish hardwood floors?

The refinishing process takes time. You will be unable to access or walk on the areas that need done. The refinishing process can be a bit messy and smells. Flowers Flooring recommends the process be done before moving in or when you are away on vacation. If you understand the refinishing process you can plan ahead.

What if my hardwood floors are currently covered with carpet, vinyl, tile or laminate?

Flowers Flooring will remove the existing flooring and haul away flooring materials that are currently on top of your hardwood. We also prep and repair any exposed hardwood floor for restoration.

Is a lot of dust created when sanding the floors?

Yes, this process can be a bit messy, even with a dustless system. Flowers Flooring takes every precaution to limit dust by putting plastic over areas not being completed. This is standard practice, as is vacuuming between each coat.

Can you change the color of the hardwood?

Yes, you can go from light to dark, or dark to light or anywhere in between. Click here to view the stain color chart.

What if there are pet stains on the floor?

Flowers Flooring encounters this often. If you have some areas that have pet stains or water damage, the best thing to do is to replace those hardwood boards by weaving in new hardwood. Keep in mind that many flooring companies are unable to complete this process and will halt work if they encounter damaged boards. Flowers Flooring is one of the few companies in the Charlotte metro area that can remove damaged boards, weave in new hardwood and continue on with the refinishing process.

Will I need to move my furniture?

While some of our customers prefer to move their own furniture, Flowers Flooring is able to move furniture to a room that is not being refinished. We will also move all furniture back into place after the floor is dry. If your entire floor is being refinished Flowers Flooring will work with you to rend a POD for furniture storage.

When can we walk on the floors?

On average, you can walk on the floors approximately 24 hours after the application of the final coat. Flowers Flooring recommends that you wear socks for the first 48 hours. No shoes and no bare feet.

When can we put area rugs on the floor?

Flowers Flooring recommends waiting 4 weeks after the job is complete before putting area rugs back in place. This allows adequate time for your floors to dry and cure.

How long will the finish last on the floor?

The lifestyle and amount of traffic on the floor will determine how long the finish will last. With regular maintenance cleaning, a floor finish can last many years – usually between 7 to 10 years.

What advice do you have to prolong the finish on hardwood floors?

The best advice Flowers Flooring can provide is to remove shoes while inside. Just this simple task can make a huge impact. We also always recommend using felt pads underneath furniture, especially chairs, to prevent scratches and scuffs.

Can plastic tips on my chairs prevent scuff marks on my floors?

Flowers Flooring recommends using felt pads to prevent scuffs and scratches. We also recommend steering clear of rolling chairs, as these tend to do a lot of damage to hardwood floors.

Refinishing your hardwood floors can be a simple task if you plan ahead and hire the right professional flooring company. Flowers Flooring recommends checking online reviews to get a good feel about a company through customer feedback. We also recommend speaking with customers themselves to inquire if a company stuck to the timeline, communicated updates and moved furniture; all of which are important factors to consider when thinking about tackling a hardwood refinishing project. To learn more about the hardwood refinishing process, or to schedule a FREE estimate call Flowers Flooring today (704) 445-7750. You can also visit our other blog posts regarding this topic.

The tulips are blooming, the birds are chirping, and winter is making its final farewell in the Charlotte area. Spring is finally here! It’s time to put away those winter boots, the same boots that have been walking across your beautiful floors all winter. Winter not only wreaks havoc in the outdoors, but mud, snow, salt and lord know what else is tracked across your floors. With the new season comes everyone’s favorite spring time activity – spring cleaning. Here are some cleaning tips that Flowers Flooring recommends to get your floors looking like new again.

Carpet

Spring is a great time to shampoo or steam clean your carpet. Flowers Flooring recommends hiring a professional if you are unsure of proper cleaning techniques. Vacuuming your carpet is also important to help remove dirt and grime build up that may have become trapped in your carpet’s fibers.

Tile

When cleaning tile, the first step is to sweep or vacuum loose dirt, dust, pet hair, and other debris. Tile only needs warm water to properly clean, but you can also seek out a manufacturer recommended cleaner. Flowers Flooring recommends steering clear of a sponge mop, which can push dirt into the grout tracks. If grout is discolored or stained, Flowers Flooring offers grout rejuvenation services. Click through to our blog Have Dirty Tile Grout to learn more.

Hardwood

Hardwoods can be cleaned by sweeping or vacuuming. Flowers Flooring recommends avoiding the use of abrasive cleaning products to avoid scratching and gouging. We recommend using Shaw Floors R2X hard surface cleaner. Flowers Flooring sells both the cleaning solution and the mop kit in our showroom. Stop by to purchase yours today.

Vinyl

Vinyl flooring including sheet vinyl and vinyl plank can be cleaned by occasional mopping. We also recommend using Shaw Floors R2X hard surface cleaner on vinyl.

Laminate

When cleaning laminate, it’s best to sweep the floor using a microfiber cloth. Use a dust mop or damp cloth for general cleaning. It’s important to clean up wet areas and allow them to properly dry, as laminate flooring can get damaged and become slippery due to moisture.

It’s a new year and that means out with the old and in with the new. The 2019 flooring trends are leaning towards brighter, bolder colors that add style and functionality to any room. Whether you’re currently considering tile, carpet, hardwood, vinyl plank or laminate, neutral colors are fading out and more vibrant colors that transform a room from drab into fab are making a comeback. Here’s what to expect in flooring trends in 2019:

Tile

While the wood-look tile is not a “new” trend by any means, it is certainly building momentum in regards to popularity and it is quickly becoming a whole house staple, which means it’s no longer being installed in just kitchens and bathrooms, but bedrooms, living rooms and more.

This trend is here to stay which is why Flowers Flooring recently added another line of wood-plank tile to our tile selection.

Vinyl Plank

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is upping the ante on realistic wood looks and is becoming a very popular choice among homeowners with high-traffic areas or children and pets. LVP is extremely durable and is the perfect choice for water areas such as bathrooms and laundry rooms, as this flooring is waterproof and virtually indestructible. LVP flooring is available in many styles that mimic current wood and tile flooring trends.

Flowers Flooring offers a wide array of LVP, including Shaw’s Floorte collection.

Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring

Even with the influx of wood-look flooring options, wood flooring is a classic choice and there will always be a market for wood flooring. The 2019 wood flooring color trends are gray, blonde and dark. Neutral wood flooring is out for 2019. Instead homeowners are looking for bold looks that make their home stand out above the rest. Standard 2.25 inch hardwood is becoming less popular and wider, more rustic looks are in. These include hand-scraped and wire brushed wood planks.

Carpet

With numerous textures, patterns, and colors available, carpet is emerging as a focal point in interior designs. No, neutral carpet has not disappeared completely, but today’s carpet choices are bolder and brighter. Berber carpet is still a popular choice, but unlike plain berber that was popular in the 1990s, today’s versions have more texture and pattern. Variations in height and sculpted effects also offer a bolder look. Even more traditional carpets now offer more visual interest with more extreme differences in pile cut and thicker, deeper loop textures.

Laminate

Laminate flooring has come a long way in the past few years. There are now laminate floors on the market that are waterproof. Yes, waterproof laminate. Flowers Flooring anticipates sales of this laminate to explode in 2019, as more homeowners seek a durable and economical flooring choice.

A carpet stair runner is typically installed on hardwood stairs and does not cover the entire width of the stair. It is bound on both sides to prevent fraying and carpet stair runners come in virtually all colors and patterns and can be cut and bound in different widths, depending on how much hardwood you want showing on each side.

Purpose of a Carpet Runner

There are many reasons homeowners add carpet stair runners over hardwood. One of the most common reasons is for safety. Hardwood stairs can be very slippery, which can present a danger, especially for children, pets or the elderly. Adding a stair runner over the hardwood stairs reduces the danger by providing traction, and a safe place to walk on the stairs. In addition, it also adds comfort. Carpet stair runners also reduce noise. Carpet absorbs sound much more than hard surfaces do, so adding a carpet stair runner will make trips up and down the stairs much quieter. A carpet runner also adds style. A hardwood staircase with a beautiful carpet stair runner creates a focal point in your home but be sure to select the proper runner. Homeowners have two options when shopping for stair runners:

1. Pre-Made Runners – These can be purchased in most box stores and give homeowners very little choice in pattern or width.
2. Custom-Made Runners – Flowers Flooring has thousands of carpets to select from for custom-made runners. We provide binding and installation service as well. During your free in-home estimate, our estimate technician will recommend patterns and widths that work well with your décor and color scheme.

Carpet Runner Width

Customers always ask our installers “How wide should the carpet runner be?” The answer to this question completely depends on the width of the staircase in your home. For stairs that are approximately 3 feet wide, Flowers Flooring suggests a 27-inch carpet runner. This width allows a good coverage of the hardwood and doesn’t make it feel like you are walking on a narrow strip, yet it’s not too wide to overpower the entire stair and leaves enough hardwood exposed on each side. For wider stairs that are 4 or 5 feet, Flowers Flooring recommends a 33-inch runner. If you have a staircase that falls outside the standard sizes listed above, a Flowers Flooring estimator will recommend the appropriate size during your free in-home estimate.

Patterned Carpet Runner

A patterned carpet runner can be a stunning choice. There are thousands to select from, so be sure the pattern will work on your stairs. Some patterned stair runners are more effective on long, flat surfaces, such as a runner in a hallway and do not look as nice on a stairway. If you have your heart set on a patterned design, Flowers Flooring recommends using a small pattern. Large patterns will get lost and will look uneven, as the pattern is bent over each stair. A small pattern will nicely showcase the design of each stair tread and riser.

Carpet Runner Padding

Just like the carpet throughout your home, a carpet runner needs a pad under it. The best carpet cushion for under a stair runner is a thin pad so that it does not raise the height of the runner by much. The pad should also be dense, to properly support the runner so that it doesn’t flex to much when walked on.

Stair runners are a great addition to your hardwood staircase for safety, style and comfort. Call Flowers Flooring (704) 445-7750 today to get started on your carpet runner project. You can schedule a FREE in-home estimate. A Flowers Flooring estimator will bring carpet samples that can be custom made into a carpet stair runner that’s perfect for your home. You may also have a remnant left over from a carpet installation that is perfect for a carpet runner. Call today to learn more.

Prevent Damage to Floors when Moving Heavy Objects

Moving heavy objects in your home can be a difficult task; it can also cause serious damage to your floors. Whether you’re moving to a new home or just want to rearrange your furniture, sliding heavy objects is always a much easier option than attempting to lift everything. However, sliding can cause damage to your floors. If you want to make sure you don’t scratch your floors, try implementing these tricks:

Slide It

Unless you are moving a very small or light piece of furniture, your best bet is to slide it. Most people don’t know how to lift properly (with their legs, not with their back), sliding can prevent serious pain.

Use Magic Sliders

Flowers Flooring recommends using felt pads or Magic Sliders, which are little pads that fit under the legs of your furniture or other heavy objects. They allow heavy items to slide easily and prevent dents and scratches in your floors.

Use Towels

If you don’t have felt pads or Magic Sliders handy, you can also place towels or rags under the legs of the furniture. Simply rock the heavy item or furniture forward or backward and slide the towel under the legs. If you are moving heavy items across carpet, Flowers Flooring recommends using cardboard under the legs, as it helps slide easily and prevents tears in the carpet or flooring.

Clean the Floors First

Flowers Flooring recommends cleaning the floors first by sweeping or with a damp mop before you start moving heavy objects. Dirt and other grit that is trapped under the legs or the material you’re using to make things slide easily can seriously scratch your floors as well.

Moving objects can be difficult, but these simple tips should make the process a bit safer and easier on your floors. As part of Flowers Flooring installation services, our team of expert installers removes and replaces all furniture and appliances. Call today to schedule your FREE in-home estimate or to speak with one of our sales representatives about getting your flooring or tile project started (704) 445-7750.

Replacing a worn-out fiberglass shower with a beautiful, new tile shower just became a whole lot easier through Flowers Flooring. Our company is now providing frameless glass doors that add both value and a touch of luxury to any tile shower. “During previous tile shower installations, customers were tasked with locating a vendor that could fit a glass door into the space after Flowers Flooring completed the tile work. Now, customers don’t have to hire a third-party vendor, and the cost of a seamless/frameless shower door is configured right into the tile shower estimate,” said Steven Flowers, Flowers Flooring Estimator. Customer know exactly how much the tile shower is going to cost up front. There are no hidden fees.”

“Most flooring companies don’t provide this service. Flowers Flooring strives to provide the best service possible in everything we do,” stated Will Moore, Regional Sales Manager. “As we started to complete more and more tile showers, we saw a definite need to start supplying the seamless glass doors rather than expect our customers to find another vendor for that service. We anticipate tile shower sales to increase as a result, since we now have a turn-key process in place and can complete tile showers in a more timely manner.”

Keeping Your Frameless Shower Doors Clean

To keep your tile shower and glass cleaner for longer, Flowers Flooring also offers EnduroShield, that works to repel water and protect against staining and etching. EnduroShield is a revolutionary easy clean coating that creates an ultra-long-lasting invisible shield on all glass, ceramic or porcelain tile, grout, stainless steel, and chrome surfaces. The product is applied and creates a permanent, non-stick barrier that is both water and oil repellent, and resistant to corrosion, etching and staining. If you are having a new tile shower installed, I highly recommend the EnduroShield upgrade,” stated Moore. “Factor in the added bonus that chemical free cleaning with less water usage saves you money and helps the environment, then EnduroShield quickly proves its return on investment.”

Frameless glass doors are made using heavy glass with minimal hardware and can be configured for nearly any space. Tile showers with seamless glass doors increase the value of a home and can transform a drab bathroom into a fab bathroom!
