Carpet Materials
Carpet can be made with a variety of synthetic and natural fibers. Different fibers have different properties and are better suited for different areas; some are more stain-resistant but may be more delicate while others are better for high-traffic areas. Familiarize yourself with some of the common fiber choices below before shopping for carpet.
Common carpet fibers
Nylon Fiber
Nylon is the most versatile of all fibers. It is also the strongest fiber of all the carpets with excellent resistance to abrasion, insect damage, molding, mildew, rot, and many chemicals. Nylon is the most popular carpet fiber, although it is not inherently stain-resistant.
Polypropylene
(Olefin) Fiber
Another bestseller, olefin fibers are colorfast and strong, and they resist abrasion, mildew, and moisture. They're easy to clean, suitable for high-traffic areas, and are usually less expensive. However, they are prone to matting, crushing, and scuffs.
Polyester Fiber
Almost as soft as nylon and prized for its ability to hold vibrant, fade-resistant colors, polyester has a luxurious feel. It's durable against abrasions, resistant to water-soluble stains, and easy to clean. However, it doesn't hold up to high traffic as well as other fibers.
PTT (Triexta Polyester)
While this common carpet material is known for its good resiliency and excellent stain resistance, it often attracts certain substances that can result in premature wear, particularly in areas with higher foot traffic. For this reason, it may be better suited to low-traffic areas.
