Making a Statement with Bold Patterned Tile

Bold Patterned Tile | Flowers Flooring

One of the popular current tile trends is bold, patterned tile. They come in vibrant hues and have Spanish, Greek, and Moroccan influences but can fit in any decor style from mid-century modern to farmhouse. They are a perfect choice for a bathroom or kitchen floor that has that “wow factor” and really sets the tone for the room. They also work really well outside on a patio floor. If you just want to add a small pop of color to a room, use them for a backsplash, accent wall, or stair riser.

Patterned Tile Design Styles

For a Spanish flair choose tile with predominantly primary colors. Bright red, blue and yellows woven together into a beautifully symmetrical pattern make a bold statement and are found in many homes throughout South and Southwest

Achieving a farmhouse style bathroom or kitchen is achievable with less colorful tiles. Choose black and white tile with perhaps shades of gray or very muted blues if you want a more subtle, classic look.

Channel the Greek Isles with shades of the Mediterranean Sea with different blue tones like sapphire, cerulean and azure on a white background. Adding a blue and white patterned tile to a room immediately conjures up feelings of serenity and works extra well in outdoor spaces like porches, pools, and outdoor kitchens.

3 Patterned Tile Types

For this particular style of tile, there are three main design types you will encounter, and they are almost always symmetrical or fit together to form a symmetrical pattern.

1. Mixed Pattern – This type of patterned tile includes a mix of patterns that coordinate with a common color scheme, but each individual tile has a different design on its face. While individual tiles are not symmetrical, the overall effect is supposed to appear random.
2. Single Repeating Pattern – Each tile has the same design and can be laid out in any direction on your floor, wall, or backsplash.
3. Large Format Pattern – Some patterned tiles combine together to create a larger overall visual pattern. Installation is a little trickier since you have to pay attention to how the pattern fits together.

It takes a bit of an adventurous spirit to pull the trigger and incorporate these bold patterned tiles into your decor, but the results are impressive. Luckily, most locally owned flooring stores allow customers to take home samples and see how they coordinate in your space before you make a large investment in patterned tile.
