beautifully refinished hardwood floors

Refinishing hardwood floors is one of the easiest ways to drastically improve the look and feel of your floors. Whether you discovered hardwood under your existing carpet, or your floors need a facelift, there’s not a home improvement project out there that will do more to improve the look, feel and value of your living space. Flowers Flooring refinishes dozens of hardwood floors each month and we receive a lot of questions regarding the overall process, when to refinish, and timelines. This blog will answer these questions and more, regarding the hardwood refinish process.

How do I know when to refinish my hardwood?

The answer to this question depends on the present state of your floors and how many times you have refinished the floors in the past. If your floor has been dulled and scratched over the years, you’re the perfect candidate for a hardwood floor refinish. However, if your hardwood floors are badly warped, sag or bulge, or if there’s been extensive water damage or pet stains, refinishing your hardwood will most likely not be enough. In these instances, you will need to replace all or part of the floor before you get started.

How many times can I refinish my floors?

Refinishing hardwood floors can only be done so many times, since the first step is sanding the floor down to a new and untainted wood surface. If you keep sanding the floor, eventually you will reach a point where there simply isn’t enough wood left to refinish. During your free in-home estimate, Flowers Flooring will check to see how much wood you have to work with.

Can I refinish my engineered hardwood floors?

Yes, as long as the wear layer on the engineered hardwood is thick enough. The average refinish removes .75 to 1 mm of the floors surface. A thick wear layer means your floor can be sanded and refinished more often, increasing the lifespan of the floor.

How long does it take to refinish hardwood floors from start to finish?

The timeline depends on the square footage of your floors and the type of polyurethane you are using – oil based, or water based. Oil based poly tends to take longer to dry. In general, it will usually take 3 to 5 days to refinish hardwood floors with an oil-based polyurethane, plus drying time. Factors that play into this is the color of the stain, how dark the stain is, how humid it is, and how many coats of polyurethane are applied. Each coat of poly usually needs 24 hours of dry time.

In addition, stain will also require 24 hours to dry, but if it’s a darker stain, it could take 36 to 48 hours to dry. After your floors are completed, you will need to wait before walking on them or replacing furniture. At a minimum, you should wait at least 24 hours before walking on the floors. For the first 48 hours Flowers Flooring recommends wearing socks only (no shoes and no bare feet). Ideally, you should wait a total of 4 days before moving furniture back into place. This is to allow enough time for the floors to dry and cure.

When is the best time to refinish hardwood floors?

The refinishing process takes time. You will be unable to access or walk on the areas that need done. The refinishing process can be a bit messy and smells. Flowers Flooring recommends the process be done before moving in or when you are away on vacation. If you understand the refinishing process you can plan ahead.

Is a lot of dust created when sanding the floors?

Yes, this process can be a bit messy, even with a dustless system. Flowers Flooring takes every precaution to limit dust by putting plastic over areas not being completed. This is standard practice, as is vacuuming between each coat.

Can you change the color of the hardwood?

Yes, you can go from light to dark, or dark to light or anywhere in between. Click here to view the stain color chart.

What if there are pet stains on the floor?

Flowers Flooring encounters this often. If you have some areas that have pet stains or water damage, the best thing to do is to replace those hardwood boards by weaving in new hardwood. Keep in mind that many flooring companies are unable to complete this process and will halt work if they encounter damaged boards. Flowers Flooring is one of the few companies in the Charlotte metro area that can remove damaged boards, weave in new hardwood and continue on with the refinishing process.

Will I need to move my furniture?

While some of our customers prefer to move their own furniture, Flowers Flooring is able to move furniture to a room that is not being refinished. We will also move all furniture back into place after the floor is dry. If your entire floor is being refinished Flowers Flooring will work with you to rend a POD for furniture storage.

When can we walk on the floors?

On average, you can walk on the floors approximately 24 hours after the application of the final coat. Flowers Flooring recommends that you wear socks for the first 48 hours. No shoes and no bare feet.

When can we put area rugs on the floor?

Flowers Flooring recommends waiting 4 weeks after the job is complete before putting area rugs back in place. This allows adequate time for your floors to dry and cure.

How long will the finish last on the floor?

The lifestyle and amount of traffic on the floor will determine how long the finish will last. With regular maintenance cleaning, a floor finish can last many years – usually between 7 to 10 years.

What advice do you have to prolong the finish on hardwood floors?

The best advice Flowers Flooring can provide is to remove shoes while inside. Just this simple task can make a huge impact. We also always recommend using felt pads underneath furniture, especially chairs, to prevent scratches and scuffs.

Can plastic tips on my chairs prevent scuff marks on my floors?

Flowers Flooring recommends using felt pads to prevent scuffs and scratches. We also recommend steering clear of rolling chairs, as these tend to do a lot of damage to hardwood floors.
